I don’t know how I feel about these “chat with AI” features yet.
To go from Google search → ChatGPT threads → AI deep conversations, there’s not that much of a logical jump between each step. But emotionally, that last one—moving into the realm of meaningful conversations—that one is dangerous.
Granted, we’ve been giving away our secrets to Google for years, searching for things we’d never say out loud even to our closest friends.
But search results didn’t talk back. Conversations are a different level of intimacy. We open ourselves up, we’re vulnerable in conversation, especially in casual conversation.
“You’re the only one who gets me.”
Sci-fi’s talked about this for so long, but now that it’s here I don’t know… What’s the difference between my online friends I’ve never met in person and chat bots? What if my kid’s best friend is an AI?
Real relationships matter. I just don’t know which ones are real anymore.
